Skip the trial-by-fire

The practical test never covers motorways. Pick this up with an instructor in a dual-control car — not on day one of your new commute with the rush-hour traffic behind you.

Local routes, real conditions

M27 east from Poole gives proper motorway driving inside 20 minutes. Far enough for joining, lane changes, exits and a service stop to all feature on a single session.

Same calm Clinton

No examiner, no test pressure. Clinton focuses on confidence-building and real-world judgement at speed — not test technique.

What we cover

From slip-road to service station.

Everything the standard test left out — taught in real motorway conditions, not on a roundabout pretending to be one.

1

Joining and exiting safely

Slip-road acceleration, mirror-signal-position to merge, and reading exit slips early. M27 from the A31, no last-minute lane changes.

2

Lane discipline at speed

When to sit in lane one, when to overtake, how to plan ahead for lorry undertakes and slower traffic. Hogging the middle lane is the most common new-driver mistake — we fix it.

3

Reading the motorway

Gantries, smart-motorway variable limits, hard-shoulder running, red Xs. Knowing what each signal means before you see it.

4

Stopping distances at 70mph

A 2-second gap doubles in the wet. We practise judging real distance with cars at real speeds — not classroom theory.

5

Breakdowns and emergencies

What to do if it goes wrong: hazards, hard shoulder vs emergency refuge area, when to leave the vehicle, when to call 999.

6

Long-distance confidence

A round trip down the M27 — far enough for fatigue to start mattering. Service-station planning, two-hour rule, staying alert.

FAQ

Motorway lesson questions

Do I have to have passed my test?
Provisional learners have been allowed on motorways with a DVSA-approved instructor in a dual-control car since 2018. So you can do motorway lessons before your test — or after, on your full licence.
How is this different from Pass Plus?
Motorway lessons are a single focus. Pass Plus is a six-module post-test course covering town, all weathers, rural, night, dual carriageway AND motorway. If motorway is your only concern, stand-alone lessons are quicker and cheaper. If you want the full post-test package and an insurance-recognised certificate, choose Pass Plus.
Which motorways do you use?
The M27 east from Poole — joined from the A31 or A338 — gives a real, busy motorway environment within 20 minutes of most Poole postcodes. We go far enough that joining, lane changes and exits all feature.
How many hours do I need?
Two hours covers the basics for a confident driver. Three to four hours is more realistic if you have never driven above 60mph. Clinton will be honest about where you are after the first session.
What if I get on the motorway and freeze?
That's exactly why dual-control matters. Clinton can take over instantly if you genuinely lose composure — but in practice, almost nobody does. The gap between expectation and reality is the biggest single reason people put motorway driving off for years.
